What’s with the name?

Grapes can only be ripened in certain climate conditions.  Traditionally, the areas of the world where grapes can be ripened lie between the latitude lines of 30 degrees and 50 degrees.  In the Northern hemisphere, below 30 degrees it’s too hot, above 50 degrees it’s too cold.

The UK lies just above 50 degrees latitude, and because of the change in our climate, grapes that could never before be ripened are now doing splendidly, and at the same time, regions further south, towards Champagne, are getting a little too warm for growing the traditional varieties used in the world’s top wines.

That is why England and Wales are very much in the spotlight.  We are making award winning still and sparkling wines and we’re only going to get better.  Our vine planting has doubled in the past 5 years, and there’s a growing number of world class winemakers making names for themselves on British soil.  Now is the time to find out more about your local producers!
